Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about commercial electrical work for West Michigan businesses.

What is infrared testing, and does my facility actually need it?
Infrared thermography puts a thermal camera on your energized gear to catch what a normal visual inspection can't. Loose terminations, overloaded conductors, and unbalanced phases all generate heat well before they fail; heat starts fires in a panel. The scan is non-invasive, so your equipment keeps running while we do it. NFPA 70B became a standard with mandatory language in its 2023 edition and calls for electrical equipment to be inspected at least every 12 months, with a shorter interval on gear that's already been flagged.
Can you schedule the work after hours so we don't have to shut down?
Yes. The disruptive parts, such as service work, panel changes, anything that drops power to a circuit, can get scheduled around your operation rather than ours. This means we can work evenings, weekends, or your slowest shift for our clients. Work that doesn't affect you, like conduit runs and rough-in, happens during normal hours. You'll have the schedule before we start, and our 24/7 emergency service covers you if something comes up after we've gone.
Who pulls the permits, and will the work pass a commercial inspection?
We handle both. Michigan's Part 8 Electrical Code adopted the 2023 National Electrical Code effective March 2024, and commercial work requires a permit plus a passing inspection from your local authority before it's signed off. ENS files the permits, schedules the inspector, and tests every circuit before leaving the site, so you're not left with failed-inspection items to deal with after we're gone.
How often does parking lot lighting need attention?
More often than most property managers expect, and often it isn't the fixture. Photocells, contactors, and pole bases take a beating from West Michigan weather (freeze-thaw cycles, road salt, wind), and a lot of what goes dark is a control or connection problem rather than a failed lamp. We provide scheduled maintenance and repairs, so dark areas get caught before they become a safety or liability issue.
Do surge protectors protect against lightning?
Partly. A surge protective device, including the lightning arresters installed at your service, clamps the voltage transients traveling on your service and branch circuits, including the secondary surges a nearby strike pushes onto the grid. Those transients are what destroy servers, controls, and HVAC boards, so a Type 1 SPD (a lightning arrester) is doing real work. What it can't do is take a direct strike on the building. That calls for a structural lightning protection system: air terminals, down conductors, and a dedicated path to ground. We'll tell you which your facility needs, and whether it needs both.
Does my building need three-phase or single-phase power?
Most small offices, retail spaces, and light commercial buildings run fine on single-phase. This is typically a 120/240-volt service that handles lighting, receptacles, and standard equipment. Three-phase delivers power more efficiently and steadily, which is what large motors need, such as those in rooftop HVAC units, elevators, compressors, commercial kitchen equipment, and production machinery. Commercial three-phase services are usually 120/208 or 277/480 volts. Switching a building from single-phase to three-phase is possible, but it's a significant project. Your utility has to bring three-phase to your building, so an upgrade depends on what's available on your street and what it costs to extend it. During the site visit, we check your existing service, confirm what's available at your address, and tell you whether your equipment justifies the change.
