Backup Generators Vs. Portable Generators: Choose Safety & Convenience
While portable generators are helpful, we don’t recommend them for home use. Our generator experts often educate customers on the risks and limitations associated with portable backup power units. We frequently cite the recommendations of the Federal Department of Energy and what they have to say about using portable generators. These are the things we believe you should be aware of if you’re using portable generators:
Carbon Monoxide (CO) Poisoning
If you don’t correctly vent a portable generator’s exhaust, you could suffer fatal CO poisoning. Most people don’t notice they’re inhaling this gas because it’s odorless.
Electric Shock and Fire Risks
It’s best to place your generator on a dry surface under an open, canopy-like structure. If you don’t have such a structure, you risk electrical shock when operating a portable generator during a storm.
Endangers Utility Workers
If you don’t disconnect your regular power source, the energy could be sent back to the utility company lines, creating a hazardous situation for utility workers.
Proper Refueling
Turn off the generator and let it cool before refueling to avoid fire or explosions.
Power Capacity and Runtime
Standby backup generators are designed to provide significantly more power and longer runtimes than portable generators.
We install your backup generator outside your home, so there’s no need to worry about exhaust fumes. These units are enclosed against the weather, so our generators reduce the risk of electric shocks. Most importantly, we connect our generators directly to your home’s natural gas or propane fuel source. Bought a brand new full house Genrac generator from Oak Electric and ENS installed it recently. Bad storms last week and the first time we have needed it it didn’t work! Thankfully Kyle from ENS figured out the problem and replaced a bad part and we are up and running again. My understanding is this is a one in a million chance this issue with a sodder joint coming lose from vibration. Kyle did a great job finding the problem and replaced that entire part with a new one. He is extremely professional, explained everything in detail and showed me the problem and solution.
